“Love yourself. Then forget it. Then, love the world.”
—Mary Oliver (To Begin With, the Sweet Grass)

What poem do you return to, again and again, behind closed doors? Which words have spoken the multitudes you feel but couldn’t speak? What piece would you read to a room if given a chance?

Please join us for an evening of words, wine, inspiration and connection as we enter this time of renewal and rebirth this spring season. We invite you to participate in one or all of the following three ways:

• Email us your favorite poem (or send us the link) for us to display at the event (info@sheplace.com)
• Bring your favorite poem to read or recite for the group (2 minutes-ish or less)
• Simply come to bask in the wonder of words!

SheMoney presents Spend. We celebrated the incredible community of women+ owned businesses we have in the Salt Lake City and surrounding areas.

SheMoney seeks to inspire intentionality in our day to day spending habits by consciously supporting women+ owned businesses. We have created, Spend., a women+ owned business guide, in effort to support women+ in their wealth creation and invite consumers into more intentional spending.

Using our spending power to enact social change is one of the most underused tools in the quest for gender and racial equity, and it is something everyone can do immediately. It’s time to harness the power of our purses for a more economically equitable world, starting right here in Utah.

ShePlace presented Tracy Gray, founder of The 22 Fund, and Gayle Jennings O'Byrne, founder of the WOCstar Fund. We learned more about how they are activating women’s financial power for change through The Ally Capital Collab, an initiative they created to channel more investment to VC funds led by Black and Brown women.

“The marches and protests may have stopped, but the work hasn’t.”

Just 0.6% of all VC funding goes to Black or Latinx women-led companies. Not only does this illustrate the staggering inequities of our financial systems, but it also represents a massive missed economic opportunity: the US GDP has lost over $500 billion by not investing in Black women, and a total of $16 TRILLION because of systemic racism.

To address this gap, Tracy and Gayle are reimagining access to capital by creating more visibility and support for and, ultimately, investment into funds that are specifically designed to invest in these overlooked and underestimated founders.

We explored the power of activating women and galvanizing our finances to create change.

Drinks + Light Refreshments followed.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we were thrilled to interview cartoonist and author, Liza Donnelly, whom we are honored to collaborate with each month at ShePlace! During our lunch hour, we got to hear Liza speak about her recent book, Very Funny Ladies: The New Yorker’s Women Cartoonists. The book is a history of the women artists and their work from 1925-2021, and includes analysis of the cultural environment for female comedic voices from early 1900's to the present day.

"An anthology of funny, poignant, and entertaining cartoons, biographical sketches, and social history all in one, Very Funny Ladies offers a unique slant on 20th-century and early 21st-century America through the humorous perspectives of the talented women who have captured in pictures and captions many of the key social issues of their time.”

Jacki Zehner had an interview with ShePlace guest author, writer, journalist, academic and podcaster, Farai Chideya. They will explore learnings from Farai’s extensive career, with a focus on her most recent endeavor, Our Body Politic. The two met many years ago at an event at the Sundance Film Festival, and the friendship keeps on growing. We are honored she is a part of our community and we can’t wait for you to meet her! And we invite you to listen to one, or many, of the 50+ episodes in advance of what is sure to be a provocative conversation.

Jacki Zehner and Claude Grunitzky, Founder of Equity Alliance, had a live conversation on LinkedIn about the current landscape of venture capital, the untapped power of social capital, and the impact possible in supporting diverse fund managers and founders.

The Equity Alliance seeks to democratize access to capital and expand opportunities to partner with investors and entrepreneurs who would otherwise remain outside of our collective field of vision.

Through investment, collaboration, and education, the Equity Alliance is partnering with diverse, mission-aligned fund managers, providing strategic value that goes beyond capital.

Hosted by Jacki Zehner, with special guests Maureen Pelton & Charlie Hartwell on LinkedIn Live!

Maureen and Charlie are Co-Founders of ShiftIt Institute and partners at Bridge Builders Collaborative. Not only are they married, but they have also blended their backgrounds to help ignite consciousness, inspire human potential, and create a paradigm shift. Their investment thesis started with a focus on the wellness of the individual as it relates to mindfulness, meditative practices, and mind-training to support human consciousness. Over the years, they have further developed a 'going deeper' approach. In this new phase of their work, together with the other partners at the Bridge Builders Collaborative, they are focusing on deeper levels of mental health, consciousness, and spirituality. Some of their notable early investments include InsightTimer, Pear Therapeutics, Muse, and Headspace. Join us for a conversation on this unique investment thesis, and how we can put our capital to work to create the world we want to live in.

Women are often expected to care for everyone else while ignoring their own needs. And yet, in the context of the past two years, the importance of self-care has never been more apparent. But what does it mean to care for ourselves? And how does self-care help us to better care for others? What exactly is meant by caretaking, and why can it sometimes be harmful?

Maureen Pelton moved to Utah from Minneapolis in 2019, where she was introduced to ShePlace Founder, Jacki Zehner, by mutual friends. Maureen is a behavioral scientist with 38 years of professional experience facilitating human flourishing, and she is an investor in the mental wellness, consciousness, and spirituality space.

Watch the virtual conversation and facilitated exercise with Maureen to learn about the art of caring as we kicked off the new year.
